Microsoft removes Autorun from Windows Vista, XP, 2000

Last night, on Patch Tuesday, Microsoft distributed a security fix that disables Autorun with USB drives and other forms of removable storage on Windows Vista, XP and 2000, and Server 2008 and 2003. Windows 7 by default has Autorun disabled for removable storage, so this is just bringing the older OSes into line.

This marks the end of an era, at least as far as worms like Conficker are concerned. Historically, all a virus had to do was place a a very basic Autorun.inf file in the root of a removable drive, and it would be automatically executed upon its insertion. As you can imagine, this was a very, very easy attack vector, and incredibly effective too.

Incidentally, because Microsoft says it hasn't seen an in-the-wild malware attack that uses CDs or DVDs, AutoPlay will still work with "shiny media."

GTimelog: A Beautifully Bare-Bones Approach to Time Tracking

One of the endearing traits of open source applications for Linux distros is that they rarely look the same, unlike on those other desktop computing platforms. That is especially the case with GTimelog Time Tracker, a tiny application that tracks what you do and when you do it during your work -- and if you wish, your play -- sessions.

Firefox 4 Beta 5 for Android now available

While I often bounce back and forth between browsers on my device, I always like to check in on Firefox and see how their beta is doing. As of beta 4 I wasn't prepared to make it my default browser yet but the latest build, beta 5 is now out for everyone to test out. Some improvements have been made to the overall workings of this build so I'm going to give it a good go. Check it out the improvements:

  • Increased responsiveness to panning and zooming
  • Increased JavaScript performance
  • Faster start up and page load times
  • Major stability improvements

The new beta 5 version is available in the Android Market right now; you'll find the download just right after the break. Leave some comments on whether or not this build is working better for you. Curious to see how many of you all out there are putting it to the test.

Android 2.3.3 gives you another reason to want it: WebM support

Our first indication of a delivery date for the Gingerbread iteration of Android came way back in May when we were perusing the FAQ to Google's then newly announced WebM video format. There should be no expressions of shock, therefore, to hear that WebM support has indeed been added into Google's mobile OS, with the lowest compatible version being today's freshly introduced Android 2.3.3. Google has already demonstrated its intention to brute-force this format into our lives, which we'll be quite happy to accept just as soon as Gingerbread starts appearing on more devices than its own Nexi.

PCH International, Gadget Maker Extraordinaire, Raises Another $26 Million

PCH International isn't your normal Chinese manufacturing company. They're located in Shenzhen, a sleepy fishing village in the 1970's that is now home to 9 million people. It's an Irish company, headquartered in Cork, Ireland. And to make things even more interesting, it was named after the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), in California. Founder Liam Casey has been dubbed "Mr. China" - as a Westerner he has a competitive advantage in dealing with U.S. and European brands trying to figure out how to make stuff in China. The company designs, produces and packages electronics and accessories in partnership with major gadget brands. Revenue has skyrocketed, from next to nothing a few years ago to $400 million last year. And they are extremely profitable, says Casey. If you're a gadget freak, there's a good chance something they've made is in your pocket or on your desk. PCH is backed by U.S. venture capitalists. They raised $21 million in 2008 from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and Focus Ventures.

Toyota to start selling home battery chargers in 2012, sate the electrical appetites of the Prii

We've seen the plug-in Prius (a few times, actually), but what we hadn't seen was how Toyota planned to get the juice from the grid to its car until now. Turns out, the automaker plans to sell home battery chargers starting in 2012 so that buyers of PHEV Prii can fully take advantage of that plug in the front fender. The chargers come in two flavors: one for the garage and one for the exterior of your home, and will cost upwards of ¥200,000 ($2411) fully installed, making it quite a bit more than GM's $2000 Voltec charging station. The good news for us all is that Toyota's charger uses the same SAE J1772 plug found in the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, so we're hopefully just weeks away from the first-ever EV charger price wars. Popcorn grabbing seems a must given the circumstances.

Arcade Table's Stealth brings high design, crazy price tag to tabletop arcade

The tabletop arcade market isn't exactly a crowded one these days, and for the most part we'd say that's for good reason -- remember those Pac-Man-induced neck spasms? Then again, most arcade tables don't look like this. The Stealth console system from the aptly-named Arcade Tables offers 60 classic games, including Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaga, in a high gloss cocktail table, sporting an HD LCD screen with an 89-degree viewing angle, built-in speaker system, and two-player controls. Okay, so the thing costs $3,300, which is more than a touch too rich for our blood, but wouldn't it be nice if more throwback consoles looked a little more, well, Stealth-y.
