PartedMagic: A Swiss Army Knife for Hard Drive Resuscitation

I started out looking for a handy disk partitioning tool to repair a colleague's ailing computer. I ended up finding a toolbox full of very handy repair and system maintenance apps. As a bonus, I got all of this packed into a nifty specialized Linux distro called "PartedMagic" that boots into RAM from a CD or USB drive.

Motorola's XT531 hits the FCC, ready for its US crossover

Motorola's XT531 has gone through more name changes than a certain rapper-cum-vodka shilling mogul, and the trend might continue as it makes its way to the US. The budget-friendly handset, known as the Fire XT in Europe and the Spice XT in Latin America, has just surfaced at the FCC toting AT&T-compatible GSM bands, UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz / 1900MHz support, WiFi and Bluetooth. Based on Moto's official PR for the handset's Chinese release, we know this 3.5-incher also sports a front-facing VGA / 5 megapixel rear camera, and is set to launch with Android 2.3 onboard. With Google's newest pal clearly chasing after heat-related naming conventions, we expect to see this one launch with an equally caliente moniker.

Advent Vega gets unofficial, GPU accelerated Android 3.2 port (video)

Advent Vega
The surprisingly cheap, Tegra 2-powered Advent Vega just keeps getting better and better, thanks in large part to a dedicated community of developers and hackers. In May the £199 (about $329) tablet got its first taste from the Honeycomb pot, now Android 3.2 has been ported over and it's sporting full, native GPU acceleration. (Hip, hop, hooray!) There are some bugs, neither Bluetooth nor the camera are working yet, but for the most part it seems like a worthwhile hack for a slate that packs impressive hardware, but ships with a depressingly outdated OS. Check out the video of it in action after the break and hit up the source link to download the ROM.

Elaborate 404 Page Is So Unfunny It?s Funny

Screen Shot 2011-08-12 at 4.03.25 PMIn Spanish it's called vergenza ajena, in German it's called fremdschmenandplaatsvervangende schaamte in Dutch. What it is is second-hand embarrassment, and I just felt it, after being linked to this overly elaborate 404 page from startup Nosh. The "humorous" video, which simulates some kind of web hipster recconnaisance mission for a "rogue" web page is one of the most vergenza ajena - inducing things I've ever seen. I am actually laughing at how unfunny it is.

What Is This? [Science]

Is this a DIY recreation of a Sarlacc pit? Maybe it's part of a making-of documentary of a famous tub-based shock site. Actually, it does involve body modification, but it's in the service of science, not human debasement. More »

Is This What Android 4: Ice Cream Sandwich Looks Like?

wm_IMG_20110810_1817101Google has been awfully protective of their latest version of Android, but thanks to the folks over at RootzWiki and Android Police, we may have our first ever glimpse at Ice Cream Sandwich. As always, keep those grains of salt handy — they claim their source is solid, but there's no guarantee this isn't just a smartly skinned Nexus S.

MoleBot interactive gaming table hooks up with Kinect, puts Milton Bradley on watch (video)

Looking to spruce up that nondescript living room table? So are a smattering of folks from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. At this week's SIGGRAPH E-tech event, a team from the entity dropped by to showcase the deadly cute MoleBot table. At its simplest, it's a clever tabletop game designed to entertain folks aged 3 to 103; at the other extreme, it's a radically new way of using Microsoft's Kinect to interact with something that could double as a place to set your supper. Improving on similar projects in the past, this shape-display method uses a two-dimensional translating cam (mole cam), 15,000 closely packed hexagonal pins equivalent to cam followers, and a layer of spandex between the mole cam and the pins to reduce friction.

When we dropped by, the Kinect mode was disabled in favor of using an actual joystick to move the ground below. In theory, one could hover above the table and use hand gestures to move the "mole," shifting to and fro in order to pick up magnetic balls and eventually affix the "tail" onto the kitty. The folks we spoke with seemed to think that there's consumer promise here, as well as potential for daycares, arcades and other locales where entertaining young ones is a priority. Have a peek at a brief demonstration vid just after the break, and yes, you can bet we'll keep you abreast of the whole "on sale" situation.

Blackberry Bold 9900 spotted in the British wilderness, bang on schedule

A tipster just spotted the Bold 9900 at a Carphone Warehouse in the UK, days before operators there and in the US expect to launch the device on August 16th. We can't be sure if it's actually for sale or just a window display that went up too early, but it certainly reassures us that the new Bold will be out on time. Alternatively, if you wanted to be harsh on RIM, you could describe this non-QNX release as being at least a year too late. (Oh, and it's good to see business chugging along as usual in ol' Blighty despite those nasty riots.)

[Thanks, Avi]
