Paint3D app promises to let you sketch and print 3D models straight from Android

3D printing may still have quite a ways to go before it becomes as ubiquitous as traditional printing, but there's plenty of developers out there working to make that happen. One such example comes out of the House 4 Hack group in Johannesburg, who have been working on an Android app called Paint3D that promises to let folks create 3D models and then print them out straight from their mobile device -- imagine saying that even just five years ago. Unfortunately, that's not available to the general public just yet, but you can get a closer look at the app and the results its able to produce at the source link below, and get an overview from one of the developers in the video after the break.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

Make Kitty Forage for Her Own Food with the Aikiou Cat Stimulo Feeding Station

The Aikiou Cat Stimulo Feeding Station engages your cat’s mind as she eats her dinner. Instead of just gobbling down her food quickly so she can get back to her 23-hour nap, she has to use her paw to dig her food out of the tubes. This “foraging” slows down eating, which can mean fewer [...]

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Business Data Reporting In 5-10 Minutes, Not Days. Facebook Rolls Out Real-Time Insights

Real Time Insights Confirmed DoneFacebook has just confirmed my scoop from last week, announcing its business performance metrics tool Page Insights will start reporting data with a latency of 5-10 minutes, not two or more days. It will open new tactics for marketers such as amplifying a well-performing post's reach with ads, or deleting one receiving negative feedback before it can trigger Unlikes or a PR crisis. Insights Product Manager David Baser tells me real-time Insights will roll out globally over the next two weeks, and I think the way it ties to Sponsored Stories ads could boost Facebook's revenues. Impressions, clicks, negative feedback instantly. Data wizards rejoice!

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Charts For Everyone: Cloud-Based iCharts Picks Up $3.1 Million For Consumer Push

iCharts growthThis is another one for those who love to mark the consumerization of enterprise technology: iCharts, the cloud-based charting service that once described itself as the "YouTube for interactive charts", has now picked up $3.1 million in funding to try to do precisely that: make its platform something used by the public at large. The Series A round comes from a group of private equity investors that include German super-angels Regehr Capital Management Group; Saeed Amidi, founder and CEO of Plug N Play; and Lorenz Graef, founder and former CEO of Globalpark.

Droid 2 users, get ready for a new SOAK test

Motorola Droid 2

Here's a question -- what's 18 months old, and still getting updates? The Motorola Droid 2, that's what. We just got a tip about an upcoming SOAK test for a new software release for the D2, which was launched in August of 2010. In Android-time, that makes it a dinosaur, and seeing Motorola still working on updates makes us happy inside. Let's be honest -- while the D2 is a bit shy of the current generation of amazing specs we're seeing on upcoming phones, it's still plenty capable and has a large following. And many users are still under their two-year contract. They deserve this sort of treatment. Nice work, Moto.

Granted, we have out doubts that this will be a major OS update, but bug fixes and security patches are the important issue -- a phone should work as advertised and have security holes patched as long as possible.

Motorola makes it clear in their correspondence with potential testers that this is not for the Droid 2 Global, nor is it for the R2D2 model. Hopefully, they are next on the list. Other details are anybody's guess, we only know that there's going to be a test soon, and that Motorola is looking for members in good standing of their Feedback Network who are still sporting the Droid 2.

When more happens, we'll let you know.

Thanks, anon!
